Astrojax Thanksgiving Sale

 Astrojax-Turkey-2

MX-Orange

Woodyo

$3-Kens

We’re not your mom, so we’re not going to tell you that you should be thankful. We’re just going to have a ginormous Thanksgiving Sale and leave you with this: “I hate turkeys. If you stand in the meat section at the grocery store long enough, you start to get mad at turkeys. There’s turkey ham, turkey bologna, turkey pastrami. Someone needs to tell the turkey, ‘man, just be yourself.” -Mitch Hedberg

Summer Skill Toy Contest Winners Announced!

Skill toy showdown winners

Today, we announce winners of our Summer Skill Toy Showdown!  This sadly indicates that summer has come to an end.  But enough of that crybaby stuff, let’s welcome the fall weather with open arms and announce our Video Contest winners. Each winner in the 3 respective categories below win $30 US ASTROJAX Gift Certificates!

Most Skill Toys Used In A Video:
Aslak Bennedsen
Copenhagen, Denmark

Aslak might be back in school, but he clearly did his summer home work! Arguably a tie with Best Display Of Skill category, check out Aslak’s skillful moves with Kendama, Diabolo, Cups, and a new one: Table Tennis Juggling (nice use of the edge and handle!). Still wondering whatever happened to that Diabolo. Is it still spinning on top of the power line?!

Best Display Of Skill:
Benji Sharib
Groton, Connecticut, USA

Benji and his buds kill it in the skills department with his entry (also technically tying with most skill toys qualification).  Check out Benji landing some sweet moves with The Pill, while kendama, yo-yo, and poi also make an appearance.

Most Creative Performance:
Stephen Tafoya
Rifle, Colorado, USA

Congrats Stephen! You too are now the proud owner of a $30 Gift Certificate. Stephen’s got a great sense of humor and growing Astrojax skills. Extra kudos for his recent work with local teens and his Astrojax Club at the Garfield County Library!

Honorable Mention:
John Ferrell
Glendora, California, USA

What can’t this dude do? TheFerrell strikes again with a great video performance, but unfortunately, we have to set a painful example at TheFerrell’s expense. This guy is a rule breaker, a troublemaker, a rebel. He brazenly broke rule number two with his 4 minute 33 second video: “Entries must be no longer than 3 minutes total.” Obey the law Ferrell!

Stay tuned folks.  We’ve got a fun Halloween contest announcement brewing! MUAAAHAHAHA!

The 10 Best Moments from Toy Fair 2013

Top-Image

Last week we posted about our time at the NYC Toy Fair briefly but stayed pretty busy running around checking out all of the sites and sounds of one of the most magical conventions on earth. But now, having settled in and emptied our memory cards thusly it’s time to show you a bit of all the sights we got to experience at one of the toy industry’s biggest events.

So, rather than blather on let’s just get right to number 10!

10. SEEING JOSEPH R. GANNASCOLI

Toy-Fair_10

You might remember him as Vito from the Sopranos, but it was pretty surreal just seeing him walk up out of nowhere with arms full of Toy Fair swag. Having only seen him in The Sopranos myself it was like seeing the character walk up, especially considering he was decked out in a NY Rangers track suit. It’s just one of those things that you don’t expect and at an event like this is just commonplace.

9. GARY JUGGLING OUR ILLUMINATED BALLS

Toy-Fair_9

We know, har har very funny but in truth Gary Auerbach is a professional skill toy player, a self-described “Playcologist”, World Frisbee Champ… and seeing him in his element was awesome. Especially so since the Boing look pretty rad on their own.   Thanks Gary!

8. OOGLING DIAMOND’S TOYS

Toy-Fair_8

If you’re not familiar, Diamond is almost the sole distributor of all of your comics worldwide. However, they also have an incredible collection of comic and superhero related statues, action figures, accessories, and the like. Above are just one of the photos (that we’re allowed to show) and I don’t want to say an Arkham Game was CONFIRMED, but I’ll remind you that’s a blockbuster franchise and Batman fans shouldn’t be disappointed this year ;)

7. HANGING OUT WITH THE SPOONER GUYS

Toy-Fair_7

Trying to relive his glory days of skating and surfing, Jim not only took the Spooner for a spin but didn’t end up dying in the process. Needless to say the guys that make the Spooner Board are far better at it than we are but it was still an awesome product to check out and if you live anywhere near rolling hills this should be on your list to check out.

6. SKYLANDERS SWAP FORCE

Toy-Fair_6

I’m a fan of Skylanders though not as hardcore as I should be. First off, the Skylanders Booth was MASSIVE in the way you think of planets and such. It took up an entire corner of the convention hall and consisted of a bona-fide castle being built and a larger-than-life pirate ship with rolling ocean carpet and Skylanders as big as an NBA player. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed to show off the footage we got but Skylanders fans should be RABID for this one when it makes its debut later this year.

5. THE KENDAMA CREW KILLS IT

Toy-Fair_5

If you’re not familiar with Kendama, stay tuned because soon you will be. But for now, go check out Kendama USA to get an idea of what this feudal Japanese toy is like and its recent resurgence. The players from Kendama USA in addition to being a great group of people also aren’t shy at all about showcasing their skills with their particular skill toy of choice. You can check out video here, and we’ll be selling them in our own store soon.

4. CHECKING OUR NINTENDO WORLD

Toy-Fair_4

I realize as a representative of a skill toy and associated subculture it may be uncouth to talk about video games but I’m sorry, a lot of us are also unashamed geeks and walking through the doors of Nintendo World was like stepping into Mecca for gamers. Everything from exclusive Nintendo World swag like Pokemon plushes to a bona fide Nintendo museum chronicling the entirety of the Nintendo run all the way through the Wii U was there and I could hardly contain my excitement (as evidenced by the stupid photo above). If you’re a gamer at all and you’re in NYC you must visit Nintendo World.

3. MYACHI BEING PLAYED WITH AN iPHONE

Toy-Fair_3

If you aren’t familiar with Myachi, it’s similar to hacky sack though your hands are fair game. Well, except for the palms anyways. We’ve talked about it on here before but can’t do it justice as well as Cody from Myachi.com does. In the absence of a second actual Myachi bean bag he started using someone’s iPhone instead with nearly the exact same efficiency you’d expect. It was dazzling and awe inspiring to say the least and made me want one bad.

2. HANGING OUT WITH LARRY

Toy-Fair_2

It’s one thing to enjoy playing with Astrojax, but another thing to enjoy them in the presence of the creator himself, Larry Shaw. Larry was running around Toy Fair with us as well, taking every opportunity to demonstrate our favorite toy and even show us a thing or two.

1. A NEW PADDLEBALL APPROACHES

Toy-Fair_1

Alright, we can’t talk specifically about the design, but ACTIVE PEOPLE gave us a sneak peak at the next generation Paddleball which allows for an entirely new way to play. That’s intriguing on its own considering the basic design of a toy like this hasn’t changed in its design or really even presentation for many decades. Getting to see the absolute innovation of a toy that’s been a mainstay for multiple generations of kids was just kind of this surreal moment where you realize you’re at the essence of what Toy Fair’s all about, and that’s why it’s number 1.

What toys and games are you excited about for 2013?
